The Guarani and Kaiowá defend their territories in Mato Grosso do Sul

12 de December de 2024

“This year, we, the Guarani and Kaiowá people, had a lot of struggles. And we lost so many young people, so many leaders because of our territory. They fell trying to fulfill their dream of a demarcated territory.”  This statement from Janio Kaiowá, Communicator for the Young Aty Repossession (Retomada Aty Jovem: RAJ) and representative of Aty Guasu youth, is also a denunciation of the recent and escalating violence against the Guarani and Kaiowá people.

With threats, gunfire, fires and the contamination of the waters, among other crimes, the communities have been the victims of a project of genocide financed, in particular, by the interests of agribusiness.  In Mato Grosso do Sul, one of the epicenters of Brazilian land conflict, the repossession of territories by indigenous peoples demonstrates that resisting and fighting are the only options open to the true owners of the land.

As a means of strengthening the organization of young people and disputing media narratives, the RAJ ran the project “Guarani and Kaiowá Youth – a new strategy for audiovisual communication”. The initiative, supported by CESE, sought to map the violence suffered by these communities, document attacks and make a documentary about the daily lives of Guarani and Kaiowá youth. Janio explained that one of the aims of the project is to counter the commercial media’s narrative about land conflicts.
