From the periphery to the coastal zone: debating environmental racism and LGBTQIAPN+phobia in Ceará

With the support of CESE’s Small Projects Program, the Terramar Institute and the Center for the Defence of Children and Adolescents (Centro de Defesa da Criança e do Adolescente: CEDECA), the discussion “From the periphery to the coastal zone” brought together 50 participants from Fortaleza and the Ceará coast to discuss environmental racism, LGBTQIAPN+phobia, gender, territory and other issues. The meeting, held on November 29 and 30, provided an intersection of experiences and strengthened ties between urban and coastal collectives, stitching together a network of resistance that amplifies marginalized voices.

The diverse program began with a welcome speech, followed by the customization of blouses for the 12th Periphery March, which took place in Grande Bom Jardim, Fortaleza. The march, on the theme Free Periphery: Rights for Life, not Death, emphasized reports of the multiple forms of violence suffered by periphery communities, bringing together social movements, youth collectives and institutions in a chorus for justice.
