About 1500 quilombolas gather in Piauí to celebrate ancestry at Houses of Terreiros meeting

“For a long time, my ancestors were prevented from manifesting their cultural expression. This, here, is our space. A gathering to celebrate our ancestry,” said Jeisy Holanda. The young quilombola lives in the Custaneira Quilombo, in Paquetá (PI). The  ‘Ancestry and experiences: VIII National Meeting of Houses of Terreiros in Quilombola Communities’ meeting was held in the territory between 7 and 9 June.

Approximately 1500 people, an overwhelming majority of whom were quilombolas, from over 200 communities in Piauí and other states such as Goiás, Bahia, Maranhão, and the Federal District, visited the Quilombo to celebrate their ancestry. The initiative received support from CESE through its Small Projects Programme.
